Stonecutter Series - Tanzania Peaberry
The Stonecutter Series is a monthly highlighted coffee in our seasonal Stonington Café. As an ode to the granite quarrying of Stonington and the Stonecutter memorial statue across from the café, these beans are selected by our roaster for their "je ne sais quoi" - unique small coffee producing region of the world, inventive processing method and / or out of this world flavor. Limited amounts available, changing at the beginning of each month, adorned with a beautiful gold & black sticker, take an adventure and grab a bag while supplies last.
For June we are highlighting a peaberry coffee from the Tanzania region of Africa. These beans come from a handful of high-altitude farms in Southern Tanzania and Northern Tanzania where these premium beans are hand sorted and blended together.
Peaberry beans are estimated to make up to around 5–10% of a coffee harvest. They occur as a result of a natural mutation inside a coffee cherry, where one ovule fails to pollinate. This results in extra space for a single developing seed / bean. Within this space, a larger and rounder seed grows inside. Peaberry beans roast quicker and more evenly due to the more rounded single bean than the typical flat-sided half beans. Peaberry beans are hand sorted and notoriously offer a sweeter cup of brew.
Tasting notes: sparkling rhubarb & pineapple with a balanced body
