Our Stonecutter Coffee is a rotating highlight coffee series - a tribute to the rich history of Deer Isle's granite quarrying industry that peaked in the early 1900s. These beans are selected for their "je ne sais quoi" and often come to us from unique coffee producing regions of the world and embrace inventive processing methods. Limited amounts available, changing frequently, and now packaged in our one of a kind Stonecutter coffee tubes!

These tubes are a new package adventure for us. Designed and hand drawn by Deer Isle local Farrell Ruppert, they feature the slabs of granite quarried out of Stonington. Made of 100% FSC certified paper, soy ink, with gold foiled accents and a sticker of the current origin inside. For every tube made, a portion of profits are donated to One Tree Planted.

Our next Stonecutter coffee comes from Omer Helera Flores in Jaen, Peru. These gigantic beans are from his farm, Finca El Plan, at 1700 meters above sea level (masl). He has 5.25 hectares of farmland growing a wide variety of coffees. These massive beans originally come from Brazil, named after Maragogipe, pronounced “marago-hee-pay”, is both a coffee variety and a municipality in Brazil in the state of Bahia, located 130 km from the state capital, Salvador. As a coffee variety, it's known for its large, "elephant bean" size and is considered a parent of other large-bean varieties like Pacamara and Maracaturra. It's a natural mutation of Typica coffee and is known for its unique flavor profile. Maragogipe, Brazil, has a history centered around sugar cane and tobacco production.

Omer has been a member of Sol & Café since 2010 and has served as an organic promoter since 2021. He is a model farmer at Sol & Café, and is providing technical support to 22 members in the base association "Familias Unidas Ecopark Café" in the area of San José del Alto. Omer has won awards for his farm and home in internal competitions at Sol & Café. These awards have served to incentivize farmers not to migrate to cities and to prove to members that you can live a dignified life in the countryside without necessarily having to migrate to the cities. As part of his award, Omer has been able to travel to Colombia to visit farms in el Eje Cafetero in Antioquia to learn more about farm management.

Omer inherited his farm from his father who first planted it in 1960 with Caturra and Typica trees. Omer fully renovated the farm in 2019 applying many of the techniques that he has learned with Sol & Café technical accompaniment, as well as trialing his own experiments in tree distancing and shade management.

I enjoyed sample roasting this coffee. It really was delicious at every sample temperature. We loved it light and quite dark on the cupping table and rarely does a coffee hold up along the entire roast spectrum, but we felt it would be a disservice to not offer this coffee at its most nuanced and lightest roast, just minutes after first crack. The body is stellar across the roast spectrum and holds up well to added dairy. We also love the way these beans look and feel, and SOUND! We are convinced they sound like a rain stick! Give them a stir.
