Our Stonecutter Coffee is a rotating highlight coffee series - a tribute to the rich history of Deer Isle's granite quarrying industry that peaked in the early 1900s. These beans are selected for their "je ne sais quoi" and often come to us from unique coffee producing regions of the world and embrace inventive processing methods. Limited amounts available, changing frequently, and now packaged in our one of a kind Stonecutter 10 oz. coffee tubes!

These tubes are a new package adventure for us. Designed and hand drawn by Deer Isle local Farrell Ruppert, they feature the slabs of granite quarried out of Stonington. Made of 100% FSC certified paper, soy ink, with gold foiled accents and a sticker of the current origin inside. For every tube made, a portion of profits are donated to One Tree Planted.

We are partnering with Balzac Brothers as our supplier of this coffee. Balzac Bros has been a specialty green bean coffee importer for over 100 years. Founded in 1917, Balzac Brothers is one of the country’s top importers of green coffee. Their family has been supplying sustainable, specialty coffee for 4 generations. They source some beautiful, ethically sourced coffees.

This coffee comes from Kiambu, Kenya, where the 105 hectare Ibonia Estate is run by 200 community members, yielding 180 tons of coffee each year of SL28 and SL34 varietals. Both varietals are known for an exceptional quality cup. These producers focus on organic matter management and soil conservation. They honor and enhance the value of the region’s natural soil - a deep reddish-brown composition known as Kikuyu loam - and recognize the important role the soil plays in developing the distinctive qualities of their coffees. This top quality AA grade coffee is fully washed and Rainforest Alliance Certified.

African coffees in general are more earthy than say Latin American coffees, but when you know that those savory notes are part of what makes Kenyan coffee fans swoon, you can appreciate the earthy, savory, subtle sweetness more. We are getting tasting notes of spiced olive oil cake and sundried tomato in this coffee, which we are really enjoying. It is different from everything else on our current coffee line-up. So come take a tastebud adventure with us. Megan and Melissa in particular are big Kenyan coffee fans. We hope you get as excited about these coffees as much as we do, or are at least open to their unique qualities.
