Our Stonecutter Coffee is a rotating highlight coffee series - a tribute to the rich history of Deer Isle's granite quarrying industry that peaked in the early 1900s. These beans are selected for their "je ne sais quoi" and often come to us from unique coffee producing regions of the world and embrace inventive processing methods. Limited amounts available, changing frequently, and now packaged in our one of a kind Stonecutter 10 oz. coffee tubes!

These tubes are a new package adventure for us. Designed and hand drawn by Deer Isle local Farrell Ruppert, they feature the slabs of granite quarried out of Stonington. Made of 100% FSC certified paper, soy ink, with gold foiled accents and a sticker of the current origin inside. For every tube made, a portion of profits are donated to One Tree Planted.

This coffee is the true definition of a “micro-lot”, aka itty bitty farm, coffee. Jeinner Cubas Vasquez is the sole owner/operator of his small farm “Finca El Ingenio” (ingenuity farm) in the El Nogal district of Jaén, Cajamarca, Peru. Growing at 1,880-2,000 meters above sea level on only 3 hectares, roughly 7 acres, of farmland, Jeinner takes great pride in trying to produce the highest quality coffee he can. He consistently tweaks his process to achieve perfect profiles and experiments with different fermentation methods and varieties. This coffee is a Gesha varietal. Gesha Arabica coffee was first identified in the 1930s in the mountainous Gesha region of southwestern Ethiopia. After seeds were collected in 1936 by a British consul, the coffee was planted and cultivated in limited, yet various regions around the world. Gesha coffee begins with the process of picking the ripest cherries. The riper the cherry means the resulting coffee will have a sweeter flavor profile. The flavor profile of Gesha coffee is one aspect that contributes to its renown. Gesha is known for its sweet flavor and aroma of floral notes. This unique flavor and its rarity of availability are some of the contributing factors for Gesha’s novelty and prestige.

Jeinner became a member of Sol & Café in 2008 and is one of their certified Q Graders (the sommelier of the coffee world). He has a meticulous palate that translates to the hyper focus quality of the beans he is growing. This coffee is so smooth and nuanced, beautiful and just darn good. It was scored as an SCA Excellent 86 by our green bean team at Cooperative Coffees. We really enjoyed this coffee across the table. We settled on a light medium leaning roast temperature to really highlight the subtle nuance of these beans. We are getting notes of peach, red apple, a subtle white pepper bite, and a phenomenal silky body. We hope you enjoy this cup as much as we do. We only have about 100 lbs. of this coffee, so if you like it, make sure to snag some up before it is gone. It likely won’t last the month of October.
