We welcome a special coffee to 44 North this winter! Coming from the Tierradentro region of Colombia and grown at around 6,000 feet, this is a washed process coffee of Colombia and of the Caturra varieties. These beans are a perfect example of 'relationship coffee' as this coffee lands in our shop because of an introduction to Simon Winograd while Melissa and Kasi were traveling in a delegation to Chiapas, Mexico back in January 2018.
We caught up with Simon back in the fall and he updated us on his recent travels home to Colombia and introduction to Ervin Andela. Ervin is a 26 year old farmer from the Nasa indigenous community in the SW department of Cauca, Colombia. In the face of change and threats to environmental and union leaders in this rural region Ervin and his community have worked hard to produce high quality and ethically grown processed coffees. Finding a market and path to export can be exceedingly challenging for small isolated farmers like Ervin's neighbors and this is where Simon and his knowledge and network of roasters assisted in the process. We are excited to have such a unique and special coffee and grateful for the hard work that went into getting this coffee to us.
This coffee is not certified organic, but is grown without the use of chemical fertilizers. This is a fairly traded, direct relationship coffee and a 26% premium is paid to farmers above C-market prices. We have chosen to display the red and black diamond symbols of the local Nasa indigenous people to distinguish this coffee.
Tasting notes: Raspberry preserve with a velvety vanilla body
Please keep in mind, we have less than 200 pounds of this lot, so it will likely go fast. We would love to hear your feedback so we can share with Ervin.
All bags come Whole Bean. For ground beans please select "Ground" and specify your brew method in the message box at checkout. Default grind is drip.
